Encanto 2: where is the sequel?
Let’s talk a little more about Bruno, on the occasion of the first broadcast of the musical animated film on M6.
In a mysterious place nestled in the heart of the mountains of Colombia, the fantastic Madrigal family lives in an enchanted house in a vibrant city, a wonderful place called Encanto. The Encanto endowed each of the children in the family with a magical ability ranging from superhuman strength to healing power. Only Mirabel did not receive any particular donation. But when the magic of the Encanto is threatened, the only ordinary child in this extraordinary family may prove to be their only hope…
Released at the end of 2021 in cinemas, Encanto arrives unencrypted on television: M6 will offer it at 9:10 p.m. this evening. Two years after its release, there was talk of following it up. In film for the cinema? In series on Disney +? As an attraction in the parks? For the moment, nothing has been achieved.
Encanto: an enchanting Christmas Disney (review)
It must be said that the history of The Fantastic Madrigal Family is special. At the box office, the film by Byron Howard, Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith did not bring in “that” 250 million dollars worldwide, while it is considered a classic by a large part of the public. Next to the billion Snow Queen (2013) and its sequel (2019), Mirabel and her loved ones were no match.
Encanto nevertheless received an excellent critical reception, and in France it did very well, attracting more than 3 million curious spectators to theaters. But in the rest of the world, it was especially on Disney+ that it was a hit. Particularly in the United States, where it was offered for streaming very shortly after its theatrical release. That’s when audiences grabbed hold of his songs, downloading them millions of times “Let’s not talk about Bruno”, “Beneath appearances” Or “What else can I do”to sing them at the top of your lungs with your family, or even record yourself in the middle of karaoke or by remaking your clips to share them on YouTube and social networks.
“Let’s not talk about Bruno” thus broke viewing records and audio downloads, making it even stronger than “This blue dream” ofAladdin Or “Let It Go” of Snow Queen.
Failing to be an immediate success, Encanto became an off-beat phenomenon, and this popularity resonated until the 2022 Oscars, when “Dos Oruguitas”, by Lin-Manuel Miranda, was chosen to represent him in the best original song category, and that his pieces were performed and acclaimed live by the stars present at the ceremony. If the statuette was finally given to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for their title of No Time to Dieand that the evening was especially marked by Will Smith’s slap towards Chris Rock, Encanto came away victorious, big winner of the Oscar for best animated film.
At the start of 2022, when taking stock of the first quarter, the Walt Disney Company announced casually in its report validated by studio boss Bob Chapek the launch ofa new franchise aroundEncanto. Information slipped into the middle of a tax report, which took stock of the firm’s box office successes, its streaming scores or its declining admissions to amusement parks or the significant sale of its derivative products.
The following summer, it was the composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (also on the music of Vaiana and in command of the suite of Mary Poppins at Disney), who swore thatEncanto would have a sequel:
“I think there’s an appetite to explore more of the Madrigal family, given the number of characters and the number of powers, he explained. And also, we have to remember where we leave the story. Now there’s sort of a more complete version of themselves. In which direction can we go now? The question is rather when it will happen. Not if it will happen… And then we will see what form it will take. Will it be another film? A series? Or a stage adaptation, with more time since stage shows generally last an hour longer than films? We haven’t discussed yet what form that will take, but I mean yes, I’m ready to continue exploring this family and all these characters: I love writing for Dolores and Camilo. I would like to write more for them. I would love to write more for Isabela too. But I don’t yet know what the next form will be Encanto…”
Clark Spencer – Encanto: “Disney stories have an impact!”
The latest news, Encanto 2 is still under study at Disney. Yvette Merino, one of its producers, took stock a few days ago with The Direct saying : “We are working closely with our publishing and consumer products partners to ensure we continue to bring Encanto. There are always different ideas, needs and wants to keep this story alive.”
She adds, however, that she does not have “nothing official to announce”, before being reassuring about the probability of seeing a sequel materialize soon: “I love the world ofEncanto and I can’t wait to see it expand within the company. We were pleasantly surprised by the reaction of spectators to this film, by the fact that so many people recognized themselves in Encanto. We are studying different ways to keep this universe alive. I know that it was teased, during D23, that a littleEncanto was going to happen soon, maybe in one of the parks. Yes, we would love that…”
Encanto 2 has therefore not yet materialized, but something is being prepared within the firm with big ears. It remains to be seen whether it will be a true sequel, a spin-off series or the construction of the sets of the famous Casita at Disneyland…
