End of filming for seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game
The second season of the Netflix event series should be broadcast on the platform this year.
It has now been three years since the nine episodes of season 1 of Squid Game created a tidal wave that no one saw coming on Netflix. Nine episodes chronicle a game of death for 45.6 billion won (or $38 million). Worn by the Korean star Lee Jung-jae (The Housemaids, The Acolyte), the series had broken all records, recording a cumulative 111 million views in less than a month. By way of comparison, the sulfurous love affairs of English society Bridgerton had not harvested “that” 82 million views for the same duration.
Since then, season 2 has been awaited, even if we were treated to a reality TV adapted from the concept of Squid Game last November. However, it seems that fans of the series created by Hwang Dong-hyeok no longer have to champ at the bit for very long, since the Korean media Osen has exclusively announced that filming for season 2 has just wrapped. Better, that of season 3, which took place in parallel, would also have been completed successfully.
Information which sheds a little more light on the release schedule for the next parts of the series. Indeed, season 2 being scheduled for the end of 2024, if the third season was finalized at the same time, we can hope that it will be broadcast from 2025. But of course, these are only hypotheses…
What is certain is that this filming lasted eleven months (from July 2023 to June 2024) and that, still according to Ozen, it should result in six episodes for the second season, and six or seven for the third. For the moment, no details of the synopsis have leaked, the embargo put in place by Netflix being very solid, even if certain theories are flying among fans, notably the return of the actress HoYeon Jung, which wowed viewers in the first part. As for the creator, three years ago, he said of the sequel he imagined:
“I think in the second season, what he learned from the games and from his experience in the first season, all of that will be put to good use in a more active way. And at the same time, in terms of The straw man (Lee Byung-hun) who was also a former winner but became a straw man, it's like Darth Vader. Some become Jedi and others become Darth Vader, right? -being Gi-hun will pass through a certain critical point where he too will be tested.”
Remember, however, that Netflix did not wait for the end of filming to show some glimpses of Squid Game 2 initially teaser revealing the faces of the new and old recruits for the next edition of the Calamar game. There were the familiar faces of Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun And Gong Yoo.
