Francis Ford Coppola reportedly set to shoot new film in Italy

Two years after the Megalopolis failure, the filmmaker has not said his last word…

He has just celebrated 87 candles. But retirement is not for him.

Two years later Megalopolisreceived in contrasting ways both by critics and the public, a new project is being born by Francis Ford Coppola.

On the occasion of his birthday, April 7, this project – on which the filmmaker had already confirmed working in 2024 – is confirmed. Titled Glimpses of the Moonthe film should be shot in southern Italy. Vito Bardi, president of the Basilicata region, announced that the director intended to set up his cameras between Basilicata and Calabria. He evokes an “ambitious project”, intended to transform these territories into a true international cinema set, with sets capable of recreating refined European atmospheres.

The feature film will adapt the novel of the same name published in 1922 by Edith Wharton, a work which focuses in particular on couple relationships and marriage in American society.

From September 2024, Coppola explained to Telegraph that he developed this project, which he imagined as an atypical work, with “strong elements of dance and music“. “I made a very strange sort of confection out of it.”he specified. The filmmaker then planned to shoot between the United Kingdom and Europe, with financing partly provided by national subsidies, after having injected 120 million dollars of his personal fortune – from his wine business – into Megalopolis.

Three months later, with the Washington Postthe director ofApocalypse Now spoke of a move to London to make the film, which he described as a “strange ’30s-style musical comedy.” A direction then confirmed in Deadlinewhere he spoke this time of a project “with a modest budget”.

A casting call from the Calabria Film Commission had once announced that filming would begin in December 2025, notably in Reggio Calabria, Cosenza and Scilla. A schedule which was ultimately not kept. But the shooting seems to be getting closer.
