Gen V: The good and the least good of season 2 (critic)
While waiting for the final season of The Boys, the suples pass overmultiplied in the rest of the spin-off. A new, resolutely exhilarating season, even if it sometimes makes it a little too much. We count the points.
Always so impressive, still as entertaining, the franchise The Boys returns with its spin-off. Season 2 of Gen V is online (3 episodes then 1 episode per week until October 22) and she fully assumes her parentage with The Boys, which we will see the last season in a few months. Until then, the spin-off does the show, even if it means making tons of them. We list the good and the least good.
+ Emma Superstar
Quite spectacularly, Mini Cricket has become the central figure of the series. Even more than Jaz Sinclair, actress Lizze Broadway bursts the screen this year. While Marie Moreau gets started in the molasses of the teenage drama, Emma is investigating Godolkin, while admirably succeeding in speaking ill-being, self-esteem and pathological trend to be belied. With a lot of nuance, Broadway is largely caring this season 2.
+ Hamish linklater
Another major success in the cast: the entry on the scene of the too rare hamish linklater. He had already tried the mutant at the time of Legion, the brilliant X-Men series of Noah Hawley. This time, he is Dean Cipher, dean of the Godolkin University and a terrifying great naughty of season 2.. The formidable actor of the midnight sermons (on Netflix) brings his presence mad to Gen V. The good bad one.
– SCATO humor
Of course, there are still a lot of guts on the walls. It is the trademark of The Boys. The series is trashy, very trash. True to its reputation, season 2 is on it everywhere. Certainly a little too much. Gen V sometimes crosses the limit of bad taste by tilting into the pure and hard scato stuffing. It squirts by all the holes, for a yes or for a no. It would be good for the series to come out of its anal phase.
– The failures of the script
“For luck”. Season 2 is dedicated to Chance Perdomo, who died on a motorcycle in March 2024. Obviously, the absence of André turned upside down the plans of the new episodes, which ostensibly struggle to hang up the wagons with the finale of season 1 (André, Marie, Jordan and Emma finished locked in a secret asy after the intervention of Homelander). The pedal scenario in a vacuum, is constantly justified and ends up going around in circles, by radiating on the experiences made on young quilies and on the manipulation of the masses.
+ Connections with The Boys
We can still recognize an undeniable quality in the scenario of season 2: it makes the connection with season 4 of The Boys. The death of Victoria Neumann, Homelander’s takeover on an increasingly fractured America, everything is there. More than a spin-off, Gen V has seasonal tunes 4 and 1/2 of the boys, essential to make the link with season 5, when the time of farewells ring (in 2026).
– Hyper-political
There is always this idea of using the series as the mirror of our real world. Gen V continues to mourn the current policy and society in current America. But it does it less and less subtle. “Make America Super Again”, this is the slogan worn by Vought and Homelander, on the verge of turning the country in the pure and hard dictatorship. We see (too much) where Eric Kripke wants to take us. Any resemblance to the excesses of a fascinating political system is clearly not fortuitous. The creator hopes to awaken consciences through scathing satire, but flirts with the didactic tirade.
+ References to pop culture
In the midst of all this, Gen V still manages to parody the studios pop-culture brilliantly, with a host of references to the Vought sauce. Special mention to Flipped, the Freaky Friday Movie where Sam and Cate exchange body (even if it was widely beaten at the box office by Garfield, the film …).
