This September 19 marked the 20th anniversary of the launch of How I Met Your Mother, on American TV. A sitcom as much adored and hated and which has left its imprint in the history of the small screen. The co-creator Craig Thomas says.
The initial idea
In an interview with TVLINE, he first explains how, with Carter Bays, they imagined this sitcom at the Friends: “We knew that we wanted to tell the story of an” elderly married couple “-it was me and my wife. Marshall and Lily were based on us at the start. And around, sailed their single single friend wondering:” When I happen? ” Then, the narrative device in flashbacks, since the future, came from the title itself.
Mother’s place in the series
The co-creator assures that from the start, they had this desire to tell the story, without the famous Mother being involved, until the end. But they did not yet know that she was going to die and that that’s why Ted had decided to embark on these long revelations in front of his children. The fatal fate of Ted’s wife was more or less decided at the end of season 1: “It was an idea that we may have touched from the pilot, but during season 1, we started to think about it more and more. The children were going to grow, so that pushed us to focus and say: ‘Come on, let’s turn this scene’. Beginning of season 2, the one they tell their father that time has spent and that he can start his life … “
The choice of the name Tracy McConnell
Moreover, the name of the famous “Mother” was not found until years later: “It was when it came to the final season, when we were really going to meet her, that the name became concrete. McConnell is in fact the family name of my maternal grandmother, and I still have McConnell who live towards Dublin” confides Craig Thomas. “It’s just a nod to them.”

Craig Thomas explains: “It is true that it is a shame that this scene was cut. The episode was too long for the chain. It was necessary to make choices. But I love this sequence with Ted and Robin. It is available in the deleted scenes of the DVD box. I think it is a great scene. Creatively, it has long been hesitant to keep it. And then we didn’t want it to be sad.
