How Taylor Swift ended up doing an Emmys skit

Mariska Hargitay, the star of New York, Special Unit, who presented the 2026 Emmy Awards last night on American TV, can clearly count on some very well-placed friends. Like Taylor Swift.

During a sketch around New York, special unit, the biggest star on the planet currently made a surprise cameo, in front of an ecstatic audience.

But how did they pull this off?

The producers of the 78th ceremony told the behind-the-scenes story of this surprise appearance during a conference organized just after the end of the evening. And the idea of ​​​​bringing the singer into this was born very early, when Mariska Hargitay started working with the authors of the evening.

The principle was simple: use the codes of the series to imagine the SVU investigators trying to understand if and how Taylor Swift was going to appear at the Emmy Awards. The singer plays a detective responsible for decoding the famous clues that could reveal the superstar’s plans for the evening.

“It was an idea that Taylor responded favorably to,” says producer Jesse Collins. Mariska Hargitay had presented the project to her, with a very clear desire: to ensure that Taylor was comfortable and that her appearance worked perfectly. “Taylor loved the script, she had some ideas and we incorporated them.”

Among his suggestions, in particular, the famous Easter eggs of which Taylor Swift has become a specialist. She suggested several clues and small details to integrate into the sketch. “She wanted them to be really official. And correct,” says producer Jeannae Rouzon-Clay.

The filming was then organized in the greatest secrecy, at the end of August, directly on the set in New York, special unit. A very small number of people knew about Taylor Swift’s arrival in order to avoid the slightest leak and an inevitable crowd.

And Mariska Hargitay had obviously planned everything to make her friend feel at home. “The setting of SVU is a bit like walking into Mariska’s house,” Collins says. “And she made everyone feel comfortable, especially Taylor.”

There was also a very good reason to trust the singer. Taylor Swift is a huge fan of Mariska Hargitay and the show. She has reportedly seen almost every episode of Special Victims Unit and even named her cat after Olivia Benson, the character played by Hargitay! And yes, the cat that we see at the end of the sketch in Taylor Swift’s arms is indeed the real Olivia Benson. A last minute idea coming directly from the singer. “The day before, Taylor said to us, ‘What if I put the cat in the scene?'” Collins says. “We told him it would be great. So we did it. And the cat delivered!”
