James Gunn shares a message of hope after the start of Superman
The success of the film is involved in a context of lively debate around the issue of immigration to the United States.
James Gunn can jubilant. With 122 million dollars in revenue in the United States and 217 million worldwide for its first weekend, its Superman succeeded in its takeoff from the box office. A good omen for the new DC Universe, inaugurated by this new cinema adaptation of the Man of Steel.
But it is not to speak big under or strategy that the director and co-president of DC Studios spoke on social networks. For Gunn, the success of the film also means something much stronger:
“”I have been incredibly grateful for your enthusiastic and kindness in recent days. We have insisted a lot on the ‘Super’ of Superman over the years, and I am happy to have made a film which focuses on the ‘Man’ part of the equation. A good man who always seeks to help those who need it. ”
The release of Superman was surrounded by a keen debate between the defenders of the new superman of James Gunn (embodied by David Corenswet), and the conservative camp which reproached him for having brought to the screen a version “Woke” and “Pro-immigrationist” of the famous superhero. A speech notably relayed by Dean Caine, who embodied Superman in the TV series Loïs “& Clarke.
The character was created in 1933 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two sons of Jewish immigrants whose parents fled the rise of anti -Semitism in Russia. Extra-terrestrial finding refuge on earth after the destruction of his planet, Superman is undeniably an allegory of their journey and immigration, which is itself at the heart of the history of the United States.
But in the current context of the policy led by the Trump administration and its anti-immigration police, the ICE, the subject is sensitive across the Atlantic. And the detractors of James Gunn promised (or rather hoped) an oven to his superman, who would have symbolized the refusal of this “leftist” vision of the world by the American people. Except that the box office (for what it is worth) agreed to Gunn.
“”The fact that it resonates so powerfully with so many people around the world is in itself a will of hope for the kindness and quality of human beings“Added James Gunn in his message.
