José Garcia: “I love characters that are a little twisted, actually”
Why does the actor increasingly agree to “play bastards”? He confides in a video.
First just met Jose Garcia at the Angoulême festival, on the occasion of the presentation ofAt full speedwhich will be released in theaters on November 6. In this romantic comedy with an unstoppable pitch – when The Wolf’s Song encounter Love at first sight in Notting Hill : Pio Marmaï plays a romantic steward who runs after Eye Haïdara, a tactical submarine officer – the 58-year-old actor plays the commander, who, according to the trailer, is not exactly thrilled with the romance that is beginning to blossom before his eyes.
We, the Leroys: very funny but above all moving (review)
A new role that is not 100% positive for José Garcia, who nevertheless has the reputation of being a friendly, talkative actor, and a fan of unstoppable comic roles, but who has recently been playing darker characters, even downright mean ones. Why does he like it so much? “playing bastards” ? This is the question he was asked at the Francophone film festival, and he was absolutely delighted to answer it, citing The Ax (2005), by Costa-Gavras, or the most recent We, the Leroysby Florent Bernard, to illustrate his point.
“José, we still manage to love him, even when he’s a jerk,” the young director told him, confirming Garcia’s theory that “To be a scoundrel or a bastard, you have to be deeply honest.”
“I love characters that are a little twisted, actually, he confirms. As I know that in real life I’m a pretty cool guy, well, when I’m going to be a bastard, I’m going to go to a limit that doesn’t pose any problem for me. (…) It’s harder for me to be taken seriously in France, but it’s happening more and more. I’m starting to get into some pretty ambiguous characters.”
