Joséphine Japy’s first film unveils its trailer: Qui Brille au Combat

A touching melodrama about a family affected by the youngest child’s disability, inspired by the actress’s own life.

Star of My Unknown, Jack Mimoun and more recently seen in My mother, God and Sylvie VartanJoséphine Japy has just signed her first film as a director.

Who shines in battle is based on the true story of his younger sister. The film follows a family whose youngest suffers from a rare genetic disorder, and the explosion that this serious handicap causes within the household. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, in the Special Screenings section.

It is Mélanie Laurent who plays the leading role in Joséphine Japy’s first feature film. A fun return to the sender since, in 2014, Mélanie Laurent offered Joséphine Japy, in her second feature, Breathethe role that would change the course of his career.

The synopsis: “Who shines in combat is the etymological meaning of the first name Bertille, the youngest of the two sisters of the Roussier family, suffering from a serious handicap with an uncertain diagnosis. The family lives in a fragile balance around this child who monopolizes everyone’s efforts and thoughts, and who could lose his life at any moment. Everyone builds themselves, lives as best they can with the demands of this rhythm and the uncertainties that accompany it: the parents, Madeleine and Gilles, and the older sister, Marion. What a daily and what future for a mother, a father, a couple, a teenager whose responsibility for her younger sister has made her an adult too quickly? When a new diagnosis is made, the cards are reshuffled and a new horizon emerges…”

Pierre-Yves Cardinal, Angelina Woreth and Sarah Pachoud complete the cast.

Released in theaters on December 31.
