Le Guru Pierre Niney is number 1 at the French box office
Yann Gozlan’s societal thriller already has 700,000 followers in one week. While The Maid passes 4 million.
French cinema regains the lead in the French box office. Almost three months later You haven’t changed by Jérôme Commandeur, it is Guru which moved into first place in the ranking, thus dethroning The Housekeeperwhich had dislodged Avatar 3 for two weeks.
Pierre Niney makes a more than promising debut in this societal thriller. Guru already has more than 700,000 spectators in less than 600 theaters for its first week (helped by 60,000 admissions during previews). It is much better than Black boxYann Gozlan’s latest project with Niney, which recorded less than 300,000 admissions during its first week, ending up at 1.2 million.
Guru should far exceed this figure. It remains to be seen how many millions of spectators will ultimately attend. For comparison, The Count of Monte Cristoat the start of summer 2024, had a first week with 1.1 million admissions before finishing at 9.5 million.
In the meantime, the film puts a distance The Housekeeperwhich crossed the mark of 4 million tickets sold in France and becomes the 4th success in the ranking of films released in 2025. Quite far behind number 1, Avatar: Of Fire and Asheswhich is close to 8.5 million admissions for its 7th week.
At the foot of the podium, we find one of the surprises of the start of the year: the historical thriller The Bozharsky Affair. Supported by Reda Kateb, it recorded another 200,000 new entries in its third week and is slowly, but surely, approaching the million mark.
Finally, we note that if Guru a hit, the other new releases of the week are struggling to take off.
Despite wide distribution in nearly 500 theaters, the animated film The Legendariesadapted from the successful comic book, barely passed 150,000 spectators. It’s exactly the same score for the historical film Nurembergworn by Russell Crowe (in 360 theaters).
