Live action minions? For their creator, it’s out of the question
“Personally, I can’t find it very attractive. But again, who knows what can happen?”
Illumination studios mascots, Minions, with their little denim overalls and their gaze filled with nonsense and joke, conquered the public from their first appearance in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in 2010 in Me, ugly and nasty. Real gold egg hens which, just with this franchise, have caused more than five billion dollars worldwide. Building on their success, these yellow acolyte yellow pills of GRU even had their own series of film with Minions in 2015 and Minions: Once upon a time GRU in 2022.
Do these animation stars have a future beyond the pencil? Why not in live action? The magazine Movie asked the question to Chris Renaud, Creator of Minions and Co-director of the first two parts of Me, ugly and nasty, as well as the last released last July, and Scheduled this evening on Canal +. He is final:
“My God, I do not hope. This is my answer. If people talked about that, I was not aware. But for me, what defines their world is that he is animated, and This allows us to do what we do. like locking up a minion in a distributor or exploding GRU when it is very cartoony, the kind of thing that we would find in Bugs Bunny. “”

While on the Disney side, live action adaptations are on the rise – since Alice in Wonderland In 2010, followed by Lion king, Cinderella, Mulan, the little mermaid and soon Snow Whiteor even Lilo and Stitch – Here too an animated film much appreciated by the public – the question of following this model for the Minions arose at Universal. But for Chris Renaud, the idea seems strongly difficult to execute, even without interest:
“I think that would become something completely different if we were doing a live action version. Personally, I can’t find it very attractive. But again, who knows what can happen? This is only my personal opinion . “
In the animation branch, he is not the only one to have a clear opinion on this subject. Last June, faced with the growing rumor of a live-action Ratatouille in which some fans already imagined Josh O’Connor (Challengers) in the chief’s skin, Pete Doctor, artistic director at Pixar, said he was not No question of adapting Pixar animated films in live action. Like Chris Renaud, he believes that transposing animation into real shots would make no sense – citing Up there Where a house floating in the air thanks to balloons is only credible in a lively world.
