Louis Leterrier will adapt the French superhero comic La Brigade chimérique into an animated series

The director of Lupine and Fast X is tackling the French version of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

It's animation week, and that's normal, since the 2024 Annecy Festival is in full swing. And in the genre, Variety had exclusive information: the comic The Chimerical Brigade will be adapted into an animated series, co-directed by Antoine Charreyron And Louis Leterrierunder the aegis of the animation studio Sacrebleu (whose latest production, Flow, the cat who was no longer afraid of wateradored by Guillermo Del Toro, was presented in Cannes then Annecy).

Published in six volumes from 2009 to 2010, drawn by Gess and written by Serge Lehman and Fabrice Colin, The Chimerical Brigade takes place in an alternative Europe of the 1930s where the superheroes of popular fiction, emerging from the Hyperworld (a sort of collective unconscious) all have a real existence, while Marie Curie directs a Radium Institute responsible for studying those who were born on the battlefields of the First World War. We also come across Gregor Samsa of Metamorphosis by Kafka (capable of controlling cockroaches, of course) or the evil Doctor Mabuse emerging from Fritz Lang's films as the Nazi storm ravages Europe. In a few words, it is a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen French-style.

Director among others of the series Lupineof Carrierof the Elusive and of Fast & FuriousLeterrier has already dabbled in animation with the ten episodes of the series Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a prequel to the 1982 film released in 2019 on Netflix. And Antoine Charreyron has already directed The Prodigies (2011), an ambitious French animated superhero film. “We plan to use many techniques from live photography and motion capture to create dynamic and sensitive animation”explains to Variety Charreyron, who will create the action scenes with stuntman Patrick Vo (Danny the Dog, Dying can wait, Fast X…), faithful collaborator of Leterrier.

If Variety was able to reveal a first preparatory visual for the series which shows the Paris skyline from the comic book universe, no release date or more precise calendar for The Chimerical Brigade, but be sure that we will talk about it again. Otherwise, Leterrier is in pre-production of the sequel to Fast Xplanned for 2026. And Flow releases in theaters on October 30:
