Malcolm: will there be new episodes after Nothing Has Changed on Disney+?

What if the return of the series was in fact the starting point for a spin-off about Leah, Malcolm’s daughter?

Will Malcolm’s return be fleeting?

Only two short hours combined is not much for the revival entitled Nothing has changed. And although the end of episode 4 leaves the door open for other stories in Malcolm’s adult life, creator Linwood Boomer tells Variety that he has no plans to direct more episodes at this time. This revival was thought of as a unique event, because that was the only way to make it exist:

“This project would never have happened if it had been an open story. Bryan has a huge career. Frankie has, like, seven at one time. The only way to do it was in a closed format. Maybe we can do something like this again in the future, but there’s no discussions going on.”

The door is ajar, but nothing is planned to prolong the adventure today… or almost.

Because we clearly felt at the heart of the revival this desire to develop a new series around Malcolm’s daughter. A sort of sequel in the form of a spin-off about the next generation, about Leah who takes up the torch, breaks the fourth wall and shares with the public her teenage anxieties.

“It’s a whole new set of characters and situations, just waiting to be exploited,” Jane Kaczmarek already insists in EW.

Same enthusiasm on the production side. Tracy Katsky Boomer assures that the character “could totally carry a series”, while Linwood Boomer salutes the potential of his interpreter, Keeley Karsten, who shines in the role of Leah: “She’s a star in the making. She has crazy potential!”

So nothing is launched. Nothing is even officially in development. But the idea of relaunching Malcolm with a new heroine is clearly planted and only requires a green light to germinate…
