Mark Ruffalo to ‘play another psychopath’ in Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17
“It’s so fun to finally have a villain role,” says the Hulk interpreter at Marvel.
On display in Poor creaturesthe new film from Yorgos Lanthimos, Mark Ruffalo plays a lecherous aristocrat seeking to seduce and take advantage of the heroine played by Emma Stone. Asked by Deadline on the occasion of the BAFTA Tea Party, the actor spoke about his new pleasure of playing villain characters.
Duncan Wedderburn in Poor creatures was his first villain, but certainly not his last: “The bad guys are the best and I was afraid of them”, explains the actor about his reluctance to accept these kinds of characters. “I really didn’t think I could do it. Being a bad person on screen, frustrating expectations.“
A reluctance quickly vanished since he tasted villainy: “It’s such a strong role, I’ve never dug into something like this – and man is it liberating and just gleefully naughty!”, he proclaims. He adds that until now, these types of roles were not really offered to him: “It’s not so much about avoiding them, they’re not really coming towards me. Now they will, I hope.”

Ruffalo is part of the cast of the upcoming film Bong Joon-ho, Mickey 17a science fiction thriller adapted from the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. Robert Pattinson plays the role of an interchangeable being whose mission is to colonize a frozen planet. Each time this being dies, it is resurrected in a new body retaining the memories of its previous lives. Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie And Tony Collette are also present.
Mark Ruffalo confirms that it reiterates the experience of the film’s villain by presenting him as “another fucking psychopath”. He goes into more detail explaining that he is the commander of the space colonization expedition: “This guy is a nasty dictator, fascist, narcissist, you can see the type. He’s as bad as any of these assholes we see today.”
The actor will also appear in Task, the next series of Brad Ingelsbythe creator of Mare of Easttowna police drama with Kate Winslet. Despite the fact that they are two different series, Mark Ruffalo explains that his character and that of Kate Winslet could meet in a future joint project: “ It’s the same universe, it’s in Philly (Philadelphia). At some point these two might meet in the future, or so they say. It’s not settled, nothing is settled.”
