Martin Campbell: “If Daniel Craig had not existed, Henry Cavill would have made an excellent James Bond”
The director of Casino Royale was amazed by the performance of the future star of Man of Steel and The Witcher.
In 2006, Casino Royale imposed Daniel Craig in the costume of the new James Bond, with a film that considerably renews the saga. Eleven years earlier, its director Martin Campbell had already reinvented Bond thanks to GoldenEyeworn by Pierce Brosnan.
The director has already said thathe would have liked to cast Henry Cavill for the main role of Casino Royale. Then 22 years old, the British comedian had not yet been chosen to interpret Clark Kent / Superman, but he had bluffed Campbell during his auditions. It was ultimately producer Barbara Broccoli who chose Craig, a little older than him, and the director then recognized that he was an excellent interpreter of 007.
“If Daniel had not existed, Henry would have made an excellent James Bond, he now says to UK Express. He was great at auditioning. His game was amazing. In addition he was in great physical shape, very handsome, very chiseled. He just looked a little young back then.”
Since these revelations, Craig has for his part assured that the character he dreamed of playing on the big screen was… Superman. Which makes this whole story even more ironic.
Now that he is just 40 years old, could Henry Cavill finally interpret James Bond, since Daniel Craig said goodbye to the character in Dying can wait ? The actor has already shared his enthusiasmand here is Campbell’s reaction to it.
“At the time of shooting this film, Daniel had really reached a point where shooting one more opus, it would have been one too many, he would have been too old, considers the director with The Hollywood Reporter. But Henry is in his forties, so if he signs, at the time of shooting let’s say the third film, he will be fifty, as it takes two to three years between each Bond. And he’s in great shape, Henry. He is great.”
Ironically, now the producers are looking for a younger comedian to revive the adventures of 007. Explaining want “reinvent it”Broccoli has already expressed his wish to cast a comedian in the early thirtieswhich eliminated another longtime favorite for the role: Idris Elba.
As of now, it’s unclear who will be chosen to play the next James Bond, with the team warning they will take the time to fine-tune his comeback before making any official announcements.
