Matthew Perry ‘was in much better shape in a while’ says Friends creator
Marta Kauffman assures that he “was sober” and he had even “quit smoking.”
The whole world was shocked to learn of the death of Matthew Perry. And Marta Kauffman Also. The co-creator of Friends revealed this morning, on the American show Today, having spoken to the 54-year-old actor on the phone just two weeks ago. And “he was happy and joyful” she emphasizes.
“It was a great moment. He seemed light, in very good shape. He was really in a good place in his life and that’s why (his sudden death) seems so unfair.”
Martha Kauffman admits to having been “completely in shock” upon learning of the death of his Chandler Bing. And for good reason:
“Honestly, my first instinct was to text him…And then I felt a deep sadness. So much sadness. It’s hard to take. One minute he’s here and happy and he feels good , really good, around him in the world. And then poof.”
The producer insists and expresses her incomprehension at this very unexpected death: “He seemed in much better shape in a while. I was so happy to see him like that. He was in a great place emotionally. He looked good. He had stopped smoking. Yes, he was sober. He had learned things throughout his experience with addiction and most importantly, he had learned that he wanted to help other addicts, and that had given him a purpose.”
Matthew Perry was found unconscious in his jacuzzi last Saturday. The exact causes of his death have not yet been revealed.
