Michael B. Jordan – Creed: “Black or white, the Fable of Underdog is universal”

From Chronicle and Fruitvale Station, Michael B. Jordan has panicked the radars of the industry. Creed is his consecration: an overexciting resurrection of the Rocky franchise, where he crosses the iron with Stallone. The film will be back this Sunday on TFX.

Creed returns to television. When it was released in early 2016, First had met one of its two main actors, Michael B. Jordanwhich has since been hit in Black Pantherof the same director, Ryan Cooglerand which has since directed the third opus of the declined saga of Rocky (this time without Sylvester Stallone). While waiting for their reunion on Sinners’ filmwe leave this interview.

Interview of January 12, 2016: Michael, I understood that Ryan Coogler, the director of Creed, had been bottled at the saga Rocky From his earliest childhood. Is that your case too?
Of course ! But there are quite numerous in this case, right? This saga has existed for forty years, it’s quite dizzying when you think about it. To put myself in condition before filming, I saw all the films, one by one. It was great. Galvanizing. With Creed In sight, it was as if I discovered them for the first time. And that I fell back in love with the character.

How s‘Has the first meeting with Stallone go?
Oh, man! Sly … He gave us an appointment at his office. We saw each other to put the project on the rails. We talked about boxing, sport, Acting … Then he gave me some pipes to improve my punch. Besides, that day, I got her fist in my stomach. And I can confirm that the animal still knows how to knock! (Laugh.)

Why Stallone deserves the Oscar

How did Ryan and you managed to get him back? We thought the dead franchise of her beautiful death with episode 6 …
The thing is that Creed is a personal project, led by Ryan for a long time and inspired by his relationship with his father. He comes from the heart. It’s a film, a real one, not the exploitation cheesy of a recipe. Rocky Balboa comes out of his retirement and, the big idea is to show it in a new perspective. There is Rocky on one side, Adonis, the son of Apollo, on the other. And the two worlds meet.

Stallone is overwhelming in the film. I admit, I chial a little …
(Laugh.) There’s no shame, guy! The film is killing from this point of view. Me too, I shed a tear …

7 legendary images of Sly’s career

When? Personally, I crack when Rocky evokes Adrian in the locker room: he says he would exchange everything to spend a few additional moments with her …
For me, it’s when Rocky picks up Adonis in prison. What he says at that time, pfff … it’s overwhelming, because you know when he can hear that it is not bogus. These emotions are true. I was not broadly led to the day we turned it.

How do we do, as an actor, to exist in the face of a legend like Stallone?
No idea! How to answer? You play, a point that’s all. The only solution is to be in the truth of the moment, emotion. It is not necessary to intellectualize too much. Just cross your fingers, hoping that it works on the screen.

Stallone looks delighted to be there. Relax, relaxed. As relieved not to be the only guarantor of the saga. It also looks like there was a lot of improvisation … I’m wrong?
No, it’s true. This is Ryan’s method. When the shooting begins, all the actors know their character on their fingertips. So we can improvise, let go, invent situations, replicas … The “truth” of the film is born in this way.

The year was hectic for you. We are talking about the fiasco of 4 Fantastic ? What lesson do you learn from it?
Whatever you do, many things are out of your control. You may work like crazy, you have no certainty that the finished product will do justice to the evil you have given yourself. It’s a shame, but it’s like that. No one never started shooting by saying that he was going to do something zero. No one dreams of mediocrity.

Does an alternative version of the film exist somewhere? Does Josh Trank show you his Director’s cut ?
No, I saw nothing. Will something come out? Honestly, I don’t know.

David Simon (The creator of The Wire) wrote this extraordinary sentence on your subject: “The only way to interest America in the fate of young people in color is to kill Michael B. Jordon on the screen. “He was referring to season 1 of The Wirebut also to Fruitvale Station
Yes. So what?

And I was wondering if it was not too heavy a responsibility to wear …
I was not aware of it. I did not plan to become the emblem of anything – even if, of course, a choice like Fruitvale Station is law to be innocent. The roles I choose ended up drawing this image of me. It seems that the industry works this way. I did not know that I was going to have to take on this responsibility. But what do you know? It suits me very well. My filmography is necessarily the reflection of my personality.

In an interview with Gq American, we felt a form of weariness on your part Faced with these questions. You said you wanted to blur the lines between white and black
Exactly. And a film like Creed is there to do it. A guy from nothing that ends up reaching the top. This fable of theunderdog is universal.
