As the title says, this 8-episode mini-series will see Michael Douglas play Benjamin Franklin. Not so much a biopic, it will tell the story of the diplomat's visit to France, who came to negotiate with Louis XVI the Kingdom's support for the war of independence led by the young United States against England.
Adapted from Stacy Schiff's novel, “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America”, Franklin will recount “the greatest gamble of Benjamin Franklin's career.”
“In December 1776, Franklin became world famous for his electrical experiments, but his passion and power were tested when he embarked on a secret mission to France, while the fate of American independence hung in the balance. 70 years old, with no diplomatic training, Franklin convinced an absolute monarchy to support the United States' entry into democracy. Thanks to his fame, charisma and ingenuity, Franklin outwitted British spies, French informers and the hostility of his colleagues to organize the Franco-American alliance of 1778 and the peace treaty with England in 1783. The eight years that Franklin spent in France were momentous for his country. Diplomats and historians still consider this to be the greatest mission accomplished by an ambassador in the history of the United States. because without the help of France, America could not have won its Revolution.”
Franklin also brings together Noah Jupe, Daniel Mays and a few French people in the cast, such as Thibault de Montalembert, Ludivine Sagnier, Assaad Bouab, Jeanne Balibar and the Canadian Théodore Pellerin in the role of the Marquis de Lafayette.
The first three episodes of Franklin will be available on Friday April 12, followed by a new episode every Friday until May 17, 2024.
