Michael Jackson biopic reveals first photo, filming begins

Michael Jackson biopic: The first trailer, unique and moving, caused a sensation

Antoine Fuqua's film will contain more than 30 songs.

The end of biopics is not for now. While the one about Amy Winehouse, Back to Black comes out on April 24, and the one on Charles Aznavour with Tahar Rahim is scheduled for the end of the year, 2025 will also be entitled to its share of musical films. One of them, and not the least, will be that devoted to the life and career of Michael Jackson.

Awaited by everyone, the film revealed a first black and white image earlier in the year. This week, during CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the public was able to discover a trailer “unique and moving”.

According to the first reports from the American media, Michael would enter into the intimacy of the interplanetary star – a shy man who always struggled to maintain a part of his private life and left an unimaginable legacy.

It would cover his debut with his brothers in the Jackson 5, his solo successes, but also his controversies (we think for example of this story of skin bleaching and his illness) and his accusations for pedophilia in 1993 and 2003.

Last year, the director, Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Equalizer) declared on this subject: “He was a great artist. And he was human. So we'll show the good, the bad and the ugly.”

With “more than thirty songs on the program”promises Varietyspectators will be able to relive the King of Pop's most iconic performances: the first “moonwalk” history in 1983 during the Motown 25 ceremony: Yesterday, Today, Forever, the dance step of Smooth Criminal where Michael leans forward at 90°C, the 1993 Superbowl, the duet with Britney Spears on The Way You Make Me Feel, etc.

The trailer begins with a concert. The crowd goes wild as Michael Jackson sings Man In The Mirror And Thriller – which makes us think that we are at the time of the Bad album around 1987. Then, it’s the breakup. We see him with his head bandaged in an ambulance – evoking the accident on the Pepsi advertisement in the 80s. Subsequently, a few years later, the singer, pale and weakened, is surrounded by bodyguards. Chased by the crowd and the paparazzi, he takes refuge in his car. Flashbacks show a child Michael and a speech from his mother:

“There may be people who think you're different, and that will make your life even harder. But you've never been like the others. Michael, you have a special aura. So use it so that it shines on the world.”

If we have to be satisfied with a simple description for the moment, we can wonder what the whole biopic has in store for us. Are we going to see Michael Jackson's private estate, Neverland? The media battle between him and Prince? The genesis of certain cult songs like Billie Jean, inspired by the love adventures of his big brothers seen through his child's eyes during the Jackson 5 era? Or even his difficult childhood with a perfectionist father who did not hesitate to correct him physically? With the family's involvement in the project, this last point risks being eclipsed.

“There are biopics – and there is Michael Jackson”said producer Graham King. “When I started, everyone told me: 'You'll never find someone for this role.'” And yet, it's Michael Jackson's own nephew, Jafaar Jackson, who takes his place. The first shots of the trailer show a stunning performance from Jafaar, capturing the charisma of his uncle.

With a recognizable signature: a single white and sequined glove, a black fedora, moccasins and a slightly open shirt, Michael Jackson is an artist with multiple talents and records. He is the male artist to have received the most Grammy Awards in one ceremony and his album Thriller is still the best-selling album of all time. To learn more about the artist who died in 2009, fans can always turn to his autobiography Moonwalk.

As for Michaelalongside Jafaar Jackson, we find Oscar nominee Colman Domingo as the patriarch, Nia Long (Boyz in the Hood) to play the mother and Miles Teller (Whiplash, Top Gun: Maverick), Laura Harrier (Spiderman: Homecoming, Blackkklansman), Kat Graham (Vampire Diaries), Jessica Sula (Split) and Larenz Tate (Ray, Power).

The release is scheduled in the United States on April 18, 2025. No information has been given for France.
