Is Mike Flanagan becoming Stephen King’s official filmmaker?

Already behind acclaimed Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill HouseOr The Midnight Sermons or even The Fall of the House of Usher, the American director is preparing a new film version of The Mist for Warner Bros..

It must be said that Mike Flanagan has established himself as one of the best passers in King’s universe on screen. He signed Jessie (2017), then Doctor Sleep (2019) and more recently The Life of Chuck (2024), all adapted from the author. In addition, he is also developing a new version of Carrie for Prime Video – in series this time – with no date announced at this stage.

According to DeadlineFlanagan has also just signed on to write and direct a new film The Mist for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Published in 1980, The Mist is one of Stephen King’s most famous novels. It had already been brought to the cinema in 2007 by Frank Darabont, with Thomas Jane in the lead role. A nice horror film full of dark poetry. Ten years later, in the midst of the boom in streaming, in 2017 we saw a more classic serial variant of The Mistwith Morgan Spector and Frances Conroy.

The story follows David Drayton, his son Billy, and several residents of a small Maine town trapped in a supermarket after a violent storm. A strange mist has invaded the city and with it, unspeakable creatures. As fear sets in, a religious fanatic, Mrs. Carmody, convinces some survivors that this is a divine punishment requiring a sacrifice. Two camps are formed. Staying indoors seems dangerous. Going out in the fog could be fatal…

No release date has yet been announced for this new version.

Note that The Mist will certainly not be available right away. Mike Flanagan completes his version of Carrie then he will tackle another major project: he is currently working on a new remake of The Exorcist with Scarlett Johansson.
