Netflix invites Zack Snyder and Wallace & Gromit to the Annecy Festival
The platform is thinking big for this unmissable event for animated cinema.
Finally a date for season 2 of Arcane on Netflix
After the success of Nimona And Chicken Run: The Nugget Menace who had managed to rise to the major ceremonies of the seventh art, Netflix returns confidently to the Annecy Festival with new animation projects. This year, the streaming platform is focusing on modeling clay with the most famous British inventor (and his dog!): Wallace & Gromit.
After confronting a were-rabbit in Wallace and Gromit, The Mystery of the Were-Rabbit (2005), the two companions will soon return with a new adventure – for the moment still mysterious. But the veil will be lifted in Annecy with the screening of the first extracts from the future feature film by Nick Park – creator of these plasticine characters – and Merlin Crossingham, in their presence.
Because it is not only on the screen that the cinema operates, visitors will be able to discover an exhibition dedicated to Wallace & Gromit presenting some of the puppets from the new film from Aardman studios and paying tribute to the famous characters of the stop-motion franchise.
On a darker note, Netflix will broadcast the first images of the Twilight of the Godsan animated series for adults produced by Zack Snyder (Rebel Moon, Justice League, 300). On this occasion, the director will be present, accompanied by his wife and producer, Deborah Snyder. In eight episodes, the series based on Nordic mythology follows Sigrid, a young Viking who is upset by a currently unknown event which took place at her wedding. She then embarks on a vengeful mission and gathers a group of warriors to challenge a God.
Last year, Snyder told the American media Collider that Twilight of the Gods would include violence and sex scenes, “because it's fun.”
Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Slasher, two repeats (review)
On the preview side, Netflix is banking on Ultraman: Rising. The story takes place in Tokyo. The capital faces an attack by monsters, and to save the city, Ken Sato, a baseball star, reluctantly trades his pack for his Ultraman costume. But along the way, he finds himself with a baby kaiju that breathes fire. We will have to fight and protect the little one!
Behind the decor, the artistic teams of the successful French series Arcana and of Spellbound – the new series by Vicky Jenson (Shrek) – will explain the creative process behind animation in a making-of session. With the English voices of Nicole Kidman, Rachel Zegler and Javier Bardem, Spellbound follows the story of Ellian, a young girl living in a distant kingdom who embarks on a mission to save her family and the kingdom from a strange fate that has turned her parents into monsters.
This year, the Annecy Festival is held from June 9 to 14. Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel…) is the guest of honor and will participate in a masterclass around animated cinema, stop-motion and its conception of staging.
