Nicolas Cage in True Detective season 5? “Nothing has been signed yet!”

For several months, it has been rumored that True Detective would have set its sights on Nicolas Cage to become its new headliner, for season 5. But as always with True Detective, it takes time and for now, the project is still far from being formalized. Recently interviewed by Variety, the actor confirmed that discussions had indeed taken place… while explaining that nothing was concrete yet:

“I think they’re still working on the script, but it’s been a while since I’ve heard anything. I haven’t signed anything. We’re just talking. I really like Issa López (who wrote season 4, Editor’s note) and I would be delighted to work with her, but nothing is finalized.”

The actor even made a rather surprising confession: he never saw the legendary first season worn by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

“I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about it…”

According to the latest information, this fifth season would take place in the Jamaica Bay district of New York. Filming is currently reportedly scheduled for 2026, although HBO has yet to announce an official date.

Nicolas Cage would thus succeed prestigious names like Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and even Jodie Foster who had taken over from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
