Nicolas Cage is downright creepy in the horrific Longlegs trailer
“Say your prayers.”
It all starts in February with an unusual, original and intriguing promotion, which arouses the curiosity of horror fans. Little by little, the mystery hovering around Longlegs, the new horror thriller by Osgood Perkins (Gretel & Hansel) is revealed through a series of enigmas and puzzles constructed from a strange alphabet, which the spectator in the role of an investigator must solve and decode.
First a date: July, then a plot: violent flashes where fear resides. FBI Agent Lee Harker, played by Maika Monroe (It Follows), investigates a serial killer (Nicolas Cage) and an unsolved case involving occult and mystical elements. Discovering a personal connection to the one she's hunting, Harker must act quickly before another murder occurs. One month after the last sign of life Longlegs, a new trailer has been released and finally, we know more! Or almost…
Nicolas Cage reveals himself (finally) in the new Longlegs teaser
“He will kill. He will kill again.” A portrait of Bill Clinton hanging on the wall places us in time. We are in the United States, in the 90s. Murders are committed by a killer who leaves behind a note: Longlegs. It's his name. Lee Harker, a new recruit to the FBI, immerses himself in this investigation and, as previous trailers already suggested, decodes the psychopath's messages from the Nine Circles of Hell described by Dante in the Divine Comedy. This is where she discovers that there is something dark in this story. But in this game of cat and mouse, who is tracking who? “I know you're not afraid of the dark… Because you're the dark one”croons the voice of the killer, that of Nicolas Cage which we find in a first totally creepy visual.
By mixing the codes of Silence of the Lambs and Fincher thrillers – Seven And Zodiac – the son of Anthony Perkins (interpreter of the most famous serial killer in cinema, Norman Bates in Psychosis), revives the thriller classics and propels them to another level of fright rubbing against occultism and religion. The work on sound and images – alternating between panoramic and square format as if to evoke the past – worries and anguishes. Those who stay until then will find a new secret message hidden, inviting them to say their prayers. Reassuring, right?
Basically, even if the trailer is longer than the old trailers, it still hides a lot of elements from us. How does Nicolas Cage choose to kill his victims? Several months ago, the actor now in competition at the Cannes Film Festival with The Surferdeclared:
“I play a character who hears voices. It's a bit like a possessed Geppetto, who makes dolls…”
Does Cage personally murder his victims? Or would he control other people, “her dolls” to kill ? Which would explain why we can see in the trailer a woman with bloody hands, a man holding an ax and a third person stabbing a woman on a bed.
