Robert Eggers will direct a new Labyrinth, and it will be a sequel

But it will be after the werewolf film from the director of The Witch and Nosferatu.

At the very end of 2024, it was rumored in Hollywood that Robert Eggers was ready to sign with Sony to remake Labyrinth, the fantastic film signed Jim Henson in 1986, with David Bowie And Jennifer Connelly to the casting. A project that is mentioned for several years in Hollywood : Scott Derrickson, director of Doctor Strange And Black Phonehad notably been courted before him to stage it. No connection with the saga taken from the teen novels with Dylan O’Brien, here’s what this project filled with magical creatures is about:

“A very young romantic girl, feeling uncomfortable in her family, escapes by reading fantastic tales. Her favorite book “The Labyrinth” opens the doors to another world one night. Sarah sees her young brother, Toby, kidnapped by a troop of elves under the orders of the seductive and cruel Jareth. She goes to rescue the child and enters the labyrinth which leads to the kidnapper’s palace. ‘Labyrinth is both an adventure story and a dive into the dreams and feelings of a young girl on the threshold of maturity.’

Deadline today confirms the news, while specifying that it will be“a sequel rather than a remake”and that it will be produced by Tristar Pictures, the company that supported the original film. Which had also recorded fairly low scores in the mid-1980s: this work especially became cult on cassettes, then on DVD. The Hollywood source also specifies that Eggers will direct The Labyrinth 2 only once his werewolf film is completed: Werwulf has just been announced at Focus Features.

The director famous for The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and for the brand new Nosferatu (which is going strong with more than 150 million worldwide receipts) would find the horror genre here. On the other hand, with the continuation of Labyrinthhe could stage his first work for the general public. So far, all of his films have been R-Rated – not recommended for under 17s unaccompanied by an adult – in the United States. In the production, we will also find a filmmaker that all children around the world know well: Chris Columbusbehind Mom, I missed the plane and the first two Harry Potter. Is it in anticipation of this deal that Robert Eggers proclaimed all his love for “the perfect Christmas comedy” about the (mis)adventures of Kevin McCallister this winter?

Home Aloneit’s a timeless film, he confided to Konbini when releasing her vampire film with Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard. It is impeccably photographed. Unlike many films of this genre, it is not overstuffed. It’s a really well-crafted film.”

Here is the trailer for Nosferatucurrently in the cinema:
