Surprising new posters for Kinds of Kindness, with multiple Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe…
How many Emma Stones are there? What about Jesse Plemmons? We'll let you count!
After winning everything at the ceremonies this year with five BAFTAs and four Oscars including that of best actress for Emma Stone (his second) and exploded the box office counters by raising more than 117 million dollars thanks to Poor Creatures, Yorgos Lanthimos returns with a new feature film Kinds of Kindness in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
But before its screening this Friday, the production company Searchlight Pictures shared on social networks a new visual just as strange as the film it is the subject of.
As usual, the Greek filmmaker offers posters that are as surprising and disturbing as they are artistic. At the editorial office, we had fun combining his best visuals and dissecting them. For The Lobster, the characters embracing the void announced the sadness and darkness of the film, the story of which revolved around the search for one's other half. More obvious certainly, the posters of Poor Creatures featured Emma Stone crudely and simply made up as a little girl would have done, and in a disproportionate body for a character with a childish mind finding herself in the body of an adult woman.
The Lobster, La Favorite, Poor Creatures: the fascinating posters of Yorgos Lanthimos
Our conclusion: whether figurative or abstract, all the posters for his films hide clues. So what do those of Kinds of Kindness ?
At first glance, we see an astonishing patchwork bringing together the pre-cut faces of the actors. Looking to the right, to the left, or upside down, we find Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons And William Dafoe slightly more highlighted than the others. This poster actually combines the different individual visuals revealed a few days ago where each actor seemed to be hidden behind their own face serving as a mask. You know, like those personality masks you find in joke stores.
But that's not all. Getting closer, we can see three graphic elements: a broken racket at the top left, a bloody thumb at the bottom left and a drop of water at the bottom right. This is not the first time these objects have surfaced. They were already present on the first visual. Strongly inspired by surrealism, the first poster employed a triangular shape in its assembly. Enough to recall the triptych composition of the story as announced in the official scenario:
“Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable that follows: a man without choices who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman worried because his wife who disappeared at sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a very specific person with a special power, destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
