That’s it, Moana 2 has crossed the billion dollars in box office revenue
And to think that Disney initially wanted to release this story in streaming, in series form!
Will the future of Hollywood cinema only consist of sequels? Concern is growing in Hollywood, at a time when the 2024 top 10 is full of them. Worse, 16 films in the world’s top 20 are sequels to American blockbusters. Among them, there is the enormous box of Moana 2which has just crossed the billion-dollar mark in global box office revenue, announces Variety.
A success predicted from its excellent start, last November right for the Thanksgiving weekend, which has only been confirmed throughout the end of year holidays. And which is therefore added to the two other billionaire blockbusters from Disney studios in 2024: Vice-Versa 2 And Deadpool & Wolverine.
Decryption of the top 10 global box office in 2024
Box office experts have detailed the profitable strategy of the big-eared firm, which had initially designed Moana 2 as a series for Disney+before changing his mind during production seeing to what extent the first opus was a hit in streaming…and not only at home!
All platforms combined, Moana is multi-viewed in living rooms around the world, with 80 billion minutes of viewing since the end of 2019. However, its theatrical score was high without breaking a record: the animated film by John Musker and Ron Clements amassed more than 600 million dollars worldwide in 2016.
Disney management therefore asked David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, all animators and/or writers on Raya and the Last Dragon Or The Madrigal Family, to transform the series Moana 2 in an animated film, and this expressly. They programmed Moana 2 like the traditional “Disney Christmas”and it worked. In detail, its sequel amassed, in the United States alone, 445 million dollars, and 567 in the rest of the world. In France, it is particularly a huge success: 7.6 million spectators have been in theaters since November 27. That’s still two more than his eldest. All this while only being at the top of the French rankings for three weeks, the release of another blockbuster from the same studio, Mufasa: The Lion Kinghaving quickly dislodged him from the throne.
If Moana 2 attracted families in large numbers to the cinema, with his new promise of adventure on the seas, fun as can be, filled with new music and without a Prince Charming story, the film received less laudatory reviews than its predecessor. More disjointed, the plot loses characters along the way and turns out to be quite anecdotal while teasing inevitable sequels. But visually, its animation remains impressive.
This box full of this sequel suggests that its live versioncurrently being produced with Dwayne Johnson, could also have a good career in theaters. Directed by Thomas Kail and now worn by Catherine Laga’aia in Vaiana, it is scheduled for July 2026 in theaters.
