The board game Catan will become a film (and a series) on Netflix
It’s one of the most popular games of the century, and it’s going to get its streaming version.
After transforming Le Loup Garou into a feature film directed by Franck Dubosc, Netflix continues to adapt board games to the screen.
The American giant seizes another monument of board games and acquires the world rights to Catania to develop a major franchise spread over different projects: a film, several series (live-action and animation), as well as unscripted programs, that is to say Catania TV games…
These projects will be produced by Darren Kyman (Asmodee), Pete Fenlon (Catan Studios), as well as Guido and Benjamin Teuber, the sons of the game’s creator, Klaus Teuber, who died in 2023. Producer Roy Lee (Vertigo Entertainment) is also associated with development.
Created in 1995 under the title The Settlers of Catan, the game imagined by Klaus Teuber has established itself as a global phenomenon, sold more than 45 million copies and translated into more than 40 languages. Its principle: reach the fictional island of Catania, exploit the resources, trade, build roads and cities… and collect enough points to win.

In a statement, the creator’s sons welcomed this new milestone: “When our father invented Catan, he dreamed of a world where people would come together to exchange, build and expand — around a table or elsewhere. This collaboration with Netflix opens a new chapter. For thirty years, Catan has connected families and friends around the world. We are delighted to see it inspire stories on a global scale, true to the vision of creativity, strategy and human connection of our father.”
Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, adds: “Catania remains for many the gateway to modern board gaming. Seeing its universe extend to an even wider audience is a source of immense pride.”
No casting or date yet, but Netflix intends to transform the island of Catania into a new audiovisual empire.
