The Cry of the Heart by Edvard Munch (trailer)
“His work is raw, real and timeless” for Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken, who is devoting a film to the famous painter.
It was during the summer of 2018 that Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken took a close interest in one of the most famous Scandinavian painters, Edvard Munch. Sharing the same nationality as his protagonist, the director realized that although his works were known in Norway, his life nevertheless remained in the shadow of his work. It was after exploring his biography that the desire to make a film arose.
Like an exhibition which takes shape gradually, Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken structured his film into four specific periods in the life ofEdvard Munch. For a better definition of these arcs, the filmmaker brought together four actors who came to embody the different periods of the painter’s tumultuous life.
It was after a sentimental failure that the young Edvard Munch goes to Berlin, where all his genius explodes in the face of the rearguard. Munch is the first fiction adaptation on the big screen about the life of the painter, known mainly for his expressionist work The Scream (1893). In the casting of this quadriptych, Alfred Ekker Strande, Mattis Herman Nyquist, Ola G. Furuseth And Anne Krigsvoll blend into the skin of the painter during decisive periods of his life.
Munch will be released in theaters on December 20, 2023.
