“The film industry is dying …” The scathing observation of James Gunn

The director points to the big Hollywood studios who want to do too much and too fast. Like Disney with Marvel …

In an interview with Rolling Stone,, James Gunn Pulles red balls on current Hollywood industry practices, which he deems responsible for his slow agony. The boss of DC Studios, which is currently developing a brand new cinematographic universe, notably points out the problem of blockbusters launched without a finalized script.

“I think that the main reason why the cinema industry is dying is not because people don’t want to go to theaters anymore. It is not because of the quality of the screens at home! The real reason is that we make films without a finished scenario.”

True to its principles, Gunn affirms that no DC project will be launched without a solid script. He thus reveals that he recently canceled a film which was however ready to be shot:

“Everyone wanted to do it, it had been validated. But the script was not good. And I can’t make a film if the script is not good.”

Conversely, he says he is very satisfied with those of Supergirl,, Lantern Or Clayface :: “We were lucky, or we made the right choices. In any case, it is a very very good job.”

The other advantage of DC Studios, according to him: the absence of industrial pressure. Contrary to what he knew at Marvel, no annual quota is imposed on him by Warner Bros.

“”There is no obligation to release x films or series per year. We will only launch what we judge of the best possible quality. “

Former pillar of the MCU with the trilogy of Galaxy goalkeepersGunn does not hesitate to point the finger at the overproduction imposed on Marvel after the arrival of Disney+:

“They came out too much content. It was not fair. It wasn’t good. And it killed them.”

An observation that Louis d’Esposito, a historic producer of Marvel Studios in private ( “Louis told me in private. I don’t even know if it was really their fault.”

Faced with displeasant MCU fans, James Gunn made a point of clarifying these words on threads: “Let’s be clear – as obvious in the context of the interview – I did not say ‘it killed them’ as if they were finished, but that they were trapped by a situation they did not control.”

He also criticized the brutal turn to the streaming that upset the industry:

“The madness of ‘everything for streaming’ has destroyed many good things, by creating a request for ‘content’ impossible to satisfy, by putting films on TV even before they had a real cinema release, etc.”

But for him, this era is finally behind us: “This madness has calmed down and the balance returned everywhere. Thank God.”
