The stuntmen will finally be rewarded at the Oscars
A great victory for the essential Hollywood Stuntmen.
The lobbying of the stuntmen ended up paying! “”We have been fighting for that for so long! Chris O’Hara and I have invested in there (…) We are very grateful. Thank you to the academy“, Jubilee the coordinator of waterfalls and director David Leitch (John Wick,, Deadpool 2,, Bullet train) on Instagram.
It is now official, a Oscar will reward the “embellishment in stunt design”. A new category that will be introduced in 2028 for the 100th anniversary of the Academy Awards. The films released in 2027 will therefore be the first to be eligible.
Often criticized for his conservatism or his doubtful choices (we remember the Oscar of the public given to Army of the Dead Because of the army of fans of Zack Snyder), the Academy this time agrees. This announcement follows that of the Oscar rewarding the best casting which will be inaugurated in 2026.
The creation of an Oscar for stuntmen was at the heart of the promotion of The Fall Guyanother achievement by David Leitch released last year. Ryan Gosling played Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman. On the film, Chris O’Hara is credited as “Stunt Designer” (Creator of Cascades) and not Cascades Coordinator. An undesigned name, inspired by that of decorative chiefs (“production designer”) and costumers (“designer costume”), which was therefore taken up by the Academy.
Jack Gill, another important voice of the movement, thus presented the stake of this Oscar on the sidelines of the exit of The Fall Guy ::
“There is no other head of service in the cinema industry who is subject to such pressure, while people’s life is at stake. The stuntmen do not want to be actors, tread the red carpet and everything else. What they want is to be recognized by their peers for having done something that involves blood, sweat and tears.”
