This scene from season 2 of Jack Ryan, in 2019, anticipated the American intervention in Venezuela!

The sequence went viral on the networks. So much so that the creator, Carlton Cuse, had to respond and explain himself.

Fiction didn’t even dare to go that far…

After the spectacular arrest of Nicolás Maduro, a scene from Jack Ryan season 2 resurfaces and creates buzz on the networks, following the American military intervention in Venezuela.

In this 2019 clip, Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst played in the Prime Video series by John Krasinski, describes Venezuela as “a major threat on the world stage,” emphasizing its wealth in oil and minerals, and its strategic location close to the United States. He asks: how can a country so rich in theory cope with a humanitarian crisis, with poverty increasing “by almost 400%” and an economy reduced “by half”? He then suggests that America should not leave such a powder keg at its doors and suggests that it would be the role of the CIA to regain control…

Obviously, the resonance with the reality of the moment is spectacular. And for Carlton Cuse, the creator, the parallel with the current American operation was not in his head at all:

“What always surprises a storyteller is the extent to which real events catch up with fiction. The goal of this season was not to prophesy, but to show what is plausible,” he explains to Deadline.

The plot was therefore theorized more than seven years before the events, to explore the complex geopolitical role of Venezuela.

Cuse and Graham Roland chose the country as a backdrop for its “long-standing strategic relevance”. He insists: “We weren’t making a political statement — we were telling a thriller centered around fictional characters.” In the series, the fictional president is confronted in his palace and removed from power, paving the way for an election.

If the climax of the series features a helicopter infiltration and a change of regime, the real operation was significantly more brutal. Which made Carton Cuse say:

“Any time the United States uses force abroad, it is a moment that deserves reflection. The consequences fall hardest on those who have very little control over events. I can only hope that things move toward stability and peace for the people who live there.”
