Tom Cruise filmed a lightsaber scene in the new Star Wars!

Visiting the set, the Mission: Impossible actor agreed to participate in the filming, behind a camera…

Tom Cruise at the helm in the Galaxy far, far away?!

This is a totally crazy anecdote that Shawn Levy told to New York Times — involving the surprise participation of Tom Cruise in the next Star Wars…and a lightsaber duel.

So what’s happening right now Star Wars: Starfighterthe new juggernaut of the saga worn by Ryan Gosling, its director revealed that Tom Cruise had made a surprise visit to the set last November. A visit which, against all expectations, turned into active participation in one of the fights in the film.

According to the New York Timesthe team was first able to witness an already surreal sequence: Tom Cruise stood there, in the mud, with pond water up to his ankles, leaning over a digital camera, his gaze ultra-concentrated, trying to frame the perfect shot. Meanwhile, Shawn Levy watched the situation, torn between disbelief and amusement. He says:

"Last week, Steven Spielberg was here," Levy told the newspaper. “And now Tom Cruise is holding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.”

Cruise originally just came to watch. But as Levy prepared a lightsaber duel scene in that body of water, he suggested — as a joke — that the star could step behind the camera. Except the joke came true. Tom Cruise entered the pond, camera in hand, operating like a professional. He filmed the sequence himself!

"When you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was filmed by Tom," concludes Levy. “Honestly…how cool is that?”

An anecdote that perfectly sums up the Tom Cruise myth: even when visiting, he ends up taking matters into his own hands.

The scenario of Star Wars: Starfighter still remains a secret, but Lucasfilm has confirmed that it will bean entirely original story set in a time never before explored in Star Wars. The screenplay is by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project), while Levy produces alongside Kathleen Kennedy.
