What does Zack Snyder think of the new DC Universe?
“It’s still too early for me…” The director gives his opinion on James Gunn’s new Superman.
He is no longer the master of the DC Universe.
Since Warner Bros. put James Gunn and Peter Safran at the head of DC Studios, Zack Snyder had to say goodbye to his Man of Steelto his Wonder Womanto his Justice League…
Asked by Variety this week on the current state of the DC Universe and James Gunn’s films, the filmmaker admits he hasn’t watched yet Superman Or Supergirl.
“I haven’t seen these films. It’s a little too personal for me. It’s still too early, I guess. But I like James (Gunn) and I like his vision.“
James Gunn never really asked Zack Snyder what he thought of his vision of the DC Universe. Except for a very specific detail:
“He asked me a question about the underwear. My opinion on the underwear, visible or not… You know, I don’t even remember it anymore, but I think it was about the briefs…”
And the filmmaker suggests that he does not really agree with his successor, who chose to put his red underwear back on. He first recalls having done Watchmen, “a film deconstructing superheroes: the neuroses, the sexual impotence around their costumes, the fetishism, all that. We cannot ignore that. I think about everything this way.” Thus, for Zack Snyder, the famous visible red underwear finds its origin among the strongmen from the Victorian era:
“The underpants worn over the superhero costume came from the strong men of the Victorian era. They were so modest that they would wear flesh-colored leotards and then put their underpants on top. That’s how it started. It was simply a reflection of a time when Victorians didn’t want to show their skin because of their modest fear of nudity. To me, it’s a real dinosaur. We don’t think like that anymore. We live in a time where we are able to do without the underpants. But maybe that’s not the case! Maybe the message, by handing over the underpants to Superman, is that we are not finally out of this Victorian prudishness. Yet I thought that was the case!
In other words, if he has no opinion on the new DC films, Zack Snyder, who had voluntarily removed his red underwear from Superman as early as Man of Steeldoesn’t really seem to appreciate James Gunn’s throwback…
Snyder’s next film, The Last Photographwas presented at the Toronto Film Festival. It does not currently have a release date in France.
