What is Nightbitch, the new Amy Adams on Disney + worth? (critical)

A depressed stay-at-home mother gradually mutates into a dog… Between caustic chronicle and fantastic fable, Nightbitch searches for its tone without ever finding it.

Funny movie. Quite intriguing on paper. Directed by Marielle Heller (The Manhattan Counterfeiters), Nightbitch portrays a worn-out mother (Amy Adams), an artist who put her career on hold to take full-time care of her two-year-old son, while the father (Scoot McNairy) goes about his professional activities in the four corners of the country…. The routine of household chores and days that are all the same, the mind-numbing outings to kindergarten, the personal aspirations that slowly fade away… The empathetic portrait of this woman experiencing motherhood like a prison is first set up in a mixture of tenderness and causticity à la Jason Reitman, before the fantastic gradually invites itself into the story, when our heroine sees strange hairs growing on her body and She understands that she is transforming into a dog. It is The Animal Kingdom in the suburbs or, in her craziest moments, a bit as if Lynette from Desperate Housewives was doing his own little remake of Didier between two trips to the supermarket. But the surrealism of Nightbitch is in reality very timid, its delirious bursts of too short duration, and the film very quickly falls back into the ruts of the nice socio chronicle, with functional dialogues and secondary characters painted in broad strokes. For a fable that praises the return to one’s primal instincts as the best way to approach motherhood, it frankly lacks bite.

By Marielle Heller. With Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Jessica Harper… Duration 1h39. Available January 24, 2025 on Disney +
