Where are Percy Jackson and Annabeth in season 2?
“It’s a little skewed by the fact that the actors are growing up — and there’s not much we can do about it,” Rick Riordan admits.
For the second season of Percy Jackson, the relationship between Percy and Annabeth remains faithful to what it is in the books: a romance that is born very slowly… but still a little more quickly in the TV series.
The author of the novels, Rick Riordan (via Variety), nevertheless tempers everything: “it is crucial to respect the original story. Their friendship between them strengthens and is tested in new ways in season 2. But that does not mean that we will find out right away if they will become more than friends…”
If we sometimes have the impression that they are already flirting, it is because the interpreters of Percy and Annabeth are older than their characters, according to the author:
“It’s a little skewed by the fact that the actors are growing up — and there’s not much we can do about it. We just have to keep going at the pace we can keep up. But seeing them as old as they have been since Season 1, and even more so in Season 3, skews our understanding of what’s going on in their heads. My impression is that the two of them are still very conflicted. People who are thinking about a relationship can be in an incredible level of denial about what’s going on. really goes on between them. I think there’s a lot of denial.”
The producers, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz, explain for their part that this season 2 shows characters who have changed after a year of separation. “Annabeth has never really lived in the real world in the last five years. This experience is really difficult for her. By the time they return to camp, they are in different places and have to find a new way to function together, as story partners.”
And they insist: Percy and Annabeth are “two kids who feel less alone together. But relationships don’t always remain simple and comforting, especially at 13-15 years old. Showing the difficult moments of this friendship is as important as the easy moments.”
Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently available on Disney Plus.
