Who will be able to dethrone Avatar 3, still at the top of the US box office?
Primate, The Maid and even Greenland 2 are far from being on par with James Cameron’s juggernaut, which continues to gain in its 4th week.
2026 is off to a good start across the Atlantic. The first 11 days of the year at the American box office totaled approximately $324 million, or +22% compared to the same period last year.
A good omen for the new financial year. Even if James Cameron’s new opus, Avatar: Of Fire and Ash does not reach the power of the first two films in the United States, with a total over four weekends of just over $342 million (-33% behind Avatar: The Way of Water), the film remains the reference for this month of January. Avatar 3 sits at the top of the US box office for the fourth consecutive weekend, grossing $22 million in 3,700 theaters this week. Worldwide, the sequel to Jake’s adventures has grossed $1.23 billion.
The Disney Thanksgiving outing, Zootopia 2 falls to 4th place in the ranking with $10 million for its seventh week (-43%) in 3,370 theaters, bringing its total to nearly $380 million in North America.
It’s the horror movie Primate (see trailer above), distributed by Paramount, which made a remarkable debut at the US box office with $11.3 million. Directed by the German Joannes Roberts, it will be released in France on January 21 and promises to be profitable for its small budget of $25 million.
The thriller The Housekeeper by Lionsgate still resists with 11.1 (-30%) and remains on the podium for its fourth weekend, bringing its total to almost $100 million, driven by Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried.
Average start, on the other hand, for Greenland 2: Migration : the disaster film is in the lower part of its projections with $8 million at the end of its first weekend, while the co-production cost $90 million.
Finally, it can be noted that Marty Supreme (A24) continues its good run in 2,512 cinemas, with $7.3M more over the week (-37%), bringing its total to $70M after 4 weeks in North America (the film will be released in France in February). A score which could well be boosted by a few trophies this evening at the Golden Globes.
Anaconda (Sony), in 3,075 cinemas, collected almost $5 million over the week (-54%), for a total of $53 million in 3 weeks which remains very disappointing.
