Why did Bodyguard never get a sequel?
TFX is rebroadcasting this cult film this evening which has never had a number 2.
Bodyguard of Mick Jackson is a big success of the 90s. And this in many ways: Kevin Costner as a bodyguard with a big heart, a singing diva played by Whitney Houston then at the height of its glory, nervous action, all-consuming passion and, of course, a timeless soundtrack. The film was the biggest commercial success of 1992 in the world after the cartoon Aladdin with 410 million dollars in revenue, and it has since been the delight of television channels. This is how it will return this evening on TFX – note that it is also available on VOD on First Max.
What if… Steve McQueen and Diana Ross had starred in Bodyguard?
If Bodyguard was released today, such success would certainly have led to a sequel, or even the creation of a franchise or a TV series. Well before Whitney Houston’s death in 2012, the idea was mentioned several times, but never brought to fruition.
When promoting Criminalreleased in April 2016 in theaters, Kevin Costner explained that almost 25 years later, people still talk to him about Bodyguard, but even if he appreciates the fact of having made very popular films, he never agrees to make sequels. He then took this cult film as an example: “ I never tried to duplicate my last success four times in a row. Or five times in a row. Or six times in a row… That doesn’t interest me. However, I could have. At one time, one of my day jobs was to make sure that the rest of Bodyguard does not exist. Especially not ! And believe me, it was work! »
