Why Heated Rivalry is completely absent from the 2026 Emmy nominations
A critical hit and pop culture phenomenon, the series on ice appears nowhere in the list revealed yesterday. The reason is purely regulatory.
It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest buzzes of the TV year: Heated Rivalry has brought fire and ice down the necks of viewers around the world.
So how can we explain that the Emmy Awards completely skipped the nominations for the 78th edition?
His absence is actually perfectly logical… considering the regulations of the Television Academy.
The series, which has become a real phenomenon in just a few months thanks to its love story between two hockey players, is simply ineligible for the Emmy Awards.
Despite its immense success and the numerous awards already won by its performers Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams from different Hollywood Guilds, Heated Rivalry could not compete this year because the Emmy Awards do not accept international productions!
According to the regulations of the Television Academy, a foreign series is only eligible if it is the result of a co-production, both financial and creative, between American and foreign partners, put in place before the start of production and intended from the outset for broadcast on an American channel or platform.
However, Heated Rivalry is a 100% Canadian production. Entirely financed and produced by Bell Media for the Crave platform, the series was only acquired by HBO Max after its production, solely to ensure its international distribution. This partnership is therefore not enough to satisfy the criteria imposed by the Emmy Awards.
This choice is also assumed by the showrunner Jacob Tierney. Before launching the project, he had approached several American investors, who wanted to fundamentally modify the series: some asked to introduce the character of Rose Landry earlier in order to create a love triangle, while others wanted to push the sex scenes to a more advanced stage of the story. Refusing these creative compromises, Jacob Tierney preferred to set up the project in Canada. A decision which notably allowed Heated Rivalry to benefit from support from the Canada Media Fund, aid reserved for Canadian productions… but which today deprives the series of a presence at the 2026 Emmy Awards.
Heated Rivalry still has a chance to win an Emmy: it should be able to claim, next November, a top honor at the next International Emmy Awards, devoted to programs produced outside the United States.
