Zootopia 2: a cute sequel but lacking in inventiveness (review)

Zootopia 2 hits the American box office this Thanksgiving

The Disney animated film even had the fourth best launch of all time worldwide.

Disney is taking over for the holidays.

While the end-of-year festivities began this weekend in the United States with ThanksgivingIt is Zootopia 2 which took over the US box office.

The studio’s animated film has collected 156 million dollars since Wednesday (over 5 days), including 96.8 million over the traditional weekend (3 days). A launch which stands out as the second best in history for a Thanksgiving weekend in the USA, just behind Moana 2 in 2024 ($225 million over five days) but ahead Frozen 2 ($125 million in 2019).

Zootopia 2 thus offers a better start than the 2016 original – $75 million in three days at the time – which ended up in the billion ($1.02 billion) worldwide.

Precisely, this is the world score of Zootopia 2 which especially impresses this Sunday evening: Jared Bush’s film shows 400 million outside the US, including 272 million in China, a historic record. World total: 556 million. The fourth largest global launch of all time (behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War And Spider-Man: No Way Home).

Another blockbuster in great shape, Wicked 2 (Universal), rakes in 93 million for its second weekend. Despite a better start than the first part, this sequel does not last as well. For comparison, Wicked last year generated $118 million over the Thanksgiving weekend after launching to $112.5 million.

But let’s not be choosy: 270.4 million in the United States and 393.3 million worldwide in ten days, that remains a great success for the musical.

In the rest of the US box office, we note in 3rd position the very solid Elusive 3which earned another $10 million over five days, for a total of $50 million after three weeks in North America.

In 5th position, Glen Powell is not doing as well in Running Man (Paramount): $5.5 million / five days, and a US score that only approaches 35 million after three weeks.

We can also note the little novelty For Eternityin 6th place, A24 romantic comedy with Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner which has taken $5.2 million since Wednesday.

Finally, two limited exits should be noted:

Netflix put Wake Up Dead Man: A tale of daggers drawn in 600 cinemas across the country (for the Oscars obviously) and still collected $4 million over five days.

Chloé Zhao’s new indie film, Hamnetworn by Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, enters the top 10 despite only 119 theaters: $880,000 over the weekend, $1.35 million over five days.

Ultimately, with a cumulative $293 million for all films combined, this Thanksgiving 2025 remains solid… but well below the record set last year, raised to $422 million across the Atlantic, thanks to the trio Moana 2, Wicked And Gladiator II. It is still the 4th biggest Thanksgiving in history, behind 2018 ($315 million) and 2014 ($294.2 million), years boosted respectively by Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Creed II And Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
