28 Years Later will be released by Sony, with a possible return of Cillian Murphy
Danny Boyle’s zombie film is confirmed.
More than 20 years ago, Danny Boyle And Alex Garland collaborated on 28 days later (available on PremièreMax), the film that reinvigorated the zombie genre, paving the way for works such as The Walking Dead, World War Z, Welcome to Zombieland And The Last of Us, to name just a few. In 2007 came out 28 weeks laterwith a new cast and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing, but for the next opus, it is the duo at the helm of the first part who are teaming up again.
We recently learned that Boyle and Garland planned to renew their collaboration in 2024 to work on a new sequel, 28 years later, which will aim to launch a brand new trilogy. Each film is expected to have a budget of around $60 million, and for now, the duo is working on the script for the first two installments.
According to The Hollywood Reporterthe project 28 years later landed in the hands of Sony. The studio won after a long bidding war with Warner Bros. to win the rights to the sequel to the 2002 horror classic. It must be said that Sony had what it took to win: a faithful collaboration of more than 30 years between the head of the studio Tom Rothman (founder of Fox Searchlight) and Danny Boyle. They worked together on eight films, ranging fromA less ordinary life (1997) and the beach (1999) to the Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire (2008) or 127 hours (2010).
The idea of bringing back the original director and screenwriter to direct a new trilogy excited the studios who saw a comparison with the return of Mad Max Fury Road (2015) with George Millerwhich was actually made at Warner.
As a reminder, Cillian Murphy was featured in the first part. His career was launched thanks to the iconic introductory scene of the 2002 feature film, where he woke up, alone, in a hospital emptied of its patients and doctors, then emerged into an equally deserted London. The actor will indeed return, at least as executive producer of 28 years later. The nuclear star ofOppenheimer could be discerned other responsibilities in the survival, but the details seem to remain in quarantine for the moment. Will he also return to the screen? Response as the project progresses…
