After the triumph of The Maid, Sydney Sweeney signs for a period film
The actress will be the heroine of an adaptation of the book Beautiful Weddings, written by Edith Wharton, and which takes place in the New York aristocracy of the early 20th century.
She’s been everywhere for months. Whether for a controversial jeans ad, for the crash of his biopic on the boxer Christinethe planetary cardboard of The Housekeeper or the excitement around season 3 ofEuphoria (expected in April on HBO max), Sydney Sweeney is certainly the American star of the moment.
And she just signed on for an exciting new film.
The 28-year-old American will play the lead role of The Custom of the Countryan adaptation of the classic novel by Edith Wharton (published in 1913), and which is called in France Beautiful weddings. The actress will also be a producer of the film.
Sydney Sweeney will play Ondine Spragg, the novel’s heroine, an ambitious young woman from the Midwest who seeks to climb the ranks of high society in New York at the turn of the 20th century. As indicated in the official press release, Ondiine Spragg, “Armed with her beauty, her audacity, boundless energy, an iron will and unwavering ambition, she faces a firmly established elite, not hesitating to provoke controversy, until love and fortune finally align.”
Produced by Studio Canal, this theatrical version is written and directed by Josie Rourke, to whom we owe Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (2018) with Margot Robbie. Filming should beginvery soon”although no other cast members have been announced yet.

Beautiful Weddings is Wharton’s great American novel, and Ondine Spragg crosses the United States and then Europe at full speed, in a period of major economic and social upheaval”, explains Josie Rourke. “The book is strikingly modern, and in writing this adaptation, Sydney Sweeney stood out to me as an obvious choice for this iconic role — as if Wharton had written this character especially for her, a century earlier.”
