Star Wars: Taika Waititi confirms that he wants to bring “a lot of fun” back to the saga
The director of Thor: Love and Thunder announces a Star Wars in his own way… at the risk of making fans cringe.
We finally know a little more about the next Star Wars from the director of Jojo Rabbit.
After entrusting Variety in 2023 prepare a very personal sequel (“It will be… a Taika Waititi film…It’s going to drive people crazy”), the director now announces a Star Wars “fun”.
Meanwhile is planned for 2026, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Groguby Jon Favreau, as well as another film with Ryan Gosling, Star Wars: Starfighter.
Again questioned by Varietyon the occasion of his presence at the Sundance film festival for Fing! by Jeffrey Walker, Taika Waititi said he wanted to revive the atmosphere of the first Star Wars: “I’m trying to take a step back and rediscover the fun of the original trilogy, that’s what I remember about those films”, and continue: “The stakes are very high, and there are serious things happening, but there is also a lot of fun to be had in these films. That’s what I’m trying to bring back.”
A statement which did not fail to exasperate fans and give rise to numerous memes on social networks.

This is not the first time that the filmmaker has drawn on the humor card, not always with success…
In 2017 and 2022, the director signed the third and fourth opuses of the films Thor. Taika Waititi featured anti-heroes far removed from the mythical Nordic character. In Thor: Ragnarokthe superhero transformed into a super loser lacking in powers, a scapegoat for all the girls he meets… In Thor: Love and Thunderwe found Thor in zero depression, wandering through space in the middle of an existential crisis. A big flop at the box office, shunned by critics, his self-deprecating rereading of “Space Viking” was overlooked.
The release date for Taika Waititi’s Star Wars is not yet known.
Taika Waititi says his #StarWars movie in development at Lucasfilm will “harness a little more of the fun from the original films.”
