Arnold Schwarzenegger announces a sequel to Conan… directed by Christopher McQuarrie
More than forty years later, the actor should reprise his role in King Conan.
More than forty years after playing the famous Cimmerian warrior in the cinema, Arnold Schwarzenegger says that a new film Conan is in preparation.
And not with just anyone behind the camera: Christopher McQuarrie, director of the latest Mission: Impossible with Tom Cruise, would be responsible for writing and directing this project entitled King Conan.
The actor revealed the information during an interview with TheArnoldFans.com during the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio (see video below). Without quoting him, he explained that a leading filmmaker had just been recruited by the Century Fox studio to relaunch the franchise, praising his recent work on four films alongside Tom Cruise. So Christopher McQuarrie.
In the process, Arnold Schwarzenegger mentions a title for this Conan 3 : it would be called King Conan.
The story could tell a new stage in the hero’s life, several decades after his first adventures. In this story, Conan would have become king, but would have gradually settled into a form of comfort before being gradually driven out of his kingdom, which would trigger a new conflict and his return to combat.
According to Schwarzenegger, the project would combine epic battles, fantastical creatures, magic and violence, in the spirit of the original stories. The actor also believes that modern visual effects and current budgets would make this story much bigger than the films of the 1980s.
It remains that for the moment, this King Conan is not official at all. We don’t know if the studio has really given the green light or if it’s just a mooted project. No release date yet.
Arnold Schwarzenegger first played the character in Conan the Barbarian in 1982, before reprising the role in Conan the Destroyerreleased in the United States on June 29, 1984. Kalidor followed in 1985 but without the brand Conan. And in 2011, a remake was attempted, without success, with Jason Momoa in the title role.
