We won’t see a “skeletal model” in The Devil Wears Prada 2
Anne Hathaway herself made the request to production.
This is a rule imposed from the start by Anne Hathaway.
During the filming of the film The Devil Wears Prada 2no question of filming models “dangerously thin” and to show on screen a certain vision of women’s bodies. A requirement revealed by her partner Meryl Streep, in an interview given to Harper’s Bazaar.
It must be said that, unlike the first film, filmed at a time when the big houses were still hesitant to lend their clothes, this sequel benefits from the massive support of the fashion industry. The cast even attended real shows during Milan Fashion Week. An immersion which visibly marked Meryl Streep.
“I was struck by the fact that not only were the models beautiful and young – everyone looks young to me at my age – but they were also alarmingly thin. I thought that problem had been solved a long time ago. Annie (Hathaway) noticed that too, and she went straight to the producers to get a guarantee that the models in the film wouldn’t be so skinny. That’s one woman with guts!”
A strong positioning, echoing recurring criticism of beauty standards in fashion. And a far from trivial detail for this sequel, which is expected at the turn and which will inevitably have a huge popular impact.
Moreover, Meryl Streep admits to having been “destabilized” by the scale of the phenomenon. Twenty years after the first film, the enthusiasm has not waned and she says that the filming took place under tension in New York:
“Even though we knew the impact of the first film two decades ago, none of us were prepared for such a wave of attention. There is goodwill. But we also had to install police barriers to contain the crowds. Busloads of fans arrived, paparazzi invaded the set…Annie remained calm, but I was frankly shaken by it all…”
In this second part, the editor-in-chief of Runway must deal with the fall of the paper press and try to keep its head above water in a dying industry. But the real danger comes from within: she finds herself face to face with Emily Blunt, a former assistant who has become a powerful executive in a luxury group, now the holder of an essential war chest…
The first film grossed $326 million at the worldwide box office.
Behind the camera, we will find David Frankel, and Aline Brosh McKenna on the screenplay.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released on May 1st in the United States and April 29th in France. Watch the new trailer below:
