“I’m such a fan…”: Steven Spielberg once again praises Denis Villeneuve’s Dune

“They are some of my favorite sci-fi films of all time.”

Steven Spielberg will make the event this summer with Disclosure Dayhis new blockbuster reconnecting with the theme of UFOs. But that doesn’t stop him from promoting his friends, in particular Denis Villeneuve, a filmmaker he holds in very high esteem.

On the cover of the latest issue ofEmpireSpielberg reiterated his admiration for the adaptations of Dune signed by the Canadian director:

Recently I’ve been loving movies Dune. They are some of my favorite science fiction films, not just recent, but of all time. Especially the second film. I think it’s the best film Denis has made. I can’t wait to see the third one. I’m sure he’ll show it to me in advance. I’m such a fan of him.

A beautiful tribute coming from the director of Encounter of the Third Kind or War of the Worldsalso impressed by the adaptation work carried out by Villeneuve: “I love books Duneand I think his homage to the books is comparable to that of Guillermo del Toro for the Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. He honored Mary Shelley and I think Denis honored Frank Hebert.

Spielberg is not the only one dying to discover Dune: part three. Warner Bros. opened pre-sales this weekend for the first IMAX screenings, on December 18 (American release date of the film), and they went like hotcakes.

This is not the first time that Spielberg has given such praise to his colleague. Two years ago, during a discussion organized after the release of Dune part 2he had squarely placed Villeneuve in the list of “world-building filmmakers” alongside Peter Jackson, James Cameron or Christopher Nolan:

“It’s an honor for me to sit here and talk to you,” continues Spielberg. “Let me start by saying that there are filmmakers who are world builders. The list is not long and we know who most of them are. Starting with Georges Méliès. Or Walt Disney. There was also Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen who I include in this list. Frederico Fellini built his own worlds. Tim Burton too. Obviously Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro… The list is long, but it’s not that long, and I deeply and fervently believe that you are one of its newest members.”

Dune 3 will be released on December 16 in France, opposite Avengers: Doomsday. Trailer:
