Historic record for Michael at the US box office
The film dedicated to Michael Jackson achieves the best start of all time for a biopic.
The King of Pop is now the king of the box office.
The biopic Michaeldedicated to Michael Jackson, hit theaters like a tornado: $97 million at the North American box office for its opening weekend.
This is quite simply the historic record, the best start of all time for a biopic, exploding the musical biopic record held by Straight Outta Compton (60 million) which dated from 2015 and the biopic in general, owned by Oppenheimer (82 million) in 2023. This is also well above Bohemian Rhapsodywhich opened to 51 million in 2018.
The biopic of Freddie Mercury and Queen had maintained a hellish pace to finish at 910 million worldwide, the record for a musical biopic. The record for a biopic – all genres combined – being held by Oppenheimer and its 975 million dollars in 2023.
For now, after its first days in theaters, Michael already has 217 million worldwide. It’s huge. For comparison, at the same time, it is more than Christopher Nolan’s historic film (173 million overall after its first weekend).
Michael also marks the second best launch of the year at the US box office, just behind Super Mario Galaxy, the movie (131 million).
The craziest? The film is a hit despite overall very negative reviews (38% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes). Fans are there to support the biopic of the controversial singer.
Lionsgate’s bet, which invested more than $200 million in the film, should therefore prove profitable! Michael even becomes its biggest launch since Hunger Games – The Rebellion: part 2 (102 million) in 2015.
The Moonwalk was therefore everywhere in American cinemas and Mario must give up his throne.
Leader throughout the month of April, Super Mario Galaxy is relegated to second place in the US box office, but adds another 21.2 million domestically. After four weeks, the Nintendo cartoon has grossed 384 million in the United States and more than $800 million in revenue worldwide. However, he should have difficulty doing as much as Super Mario Bros. the movie (1.3 billion in 2023).
Finally, on the third step of the podium, Last Chance Project continues to impress: 13.2 million for its sixth weekend, and already 305 million in North America, and nearly 600 million internationally.
