He’s on a roll this year!
After the excellent No Other Choiceacclaimed by the press around the world, Park Chan-wook will soon be president of the jury for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
The South Korean filmmaker to whom we owe Oldboy or even Decision to Leave is preparing an ambitious western-style thriller which will be called The Brigands of Rattlecreek. A project that lines up an XXL cast: Oscar winner for best actor Matthew McConaughey, Oscar nominee Austin Butler, star ofThe Last of Us Pedro Pascal, who will be accompanied by Chinese actress Tang Wei.
At the helm, Park Chan-wook will also sign the adaptation of the original screenplay by S. Craig Zahler, known for Bone Tomahawk And Dragged on the asphalt (Dragged Across Concrete). A mix of talents that promises a western far from the beaten track.
Presented as “an iconic fresco of revenge in the American West”, The Brigands of Rattlecreek promises to be in line with the filmmaker’s obsessions: violence, family, memory and moral consequences. The film is described as a work emotionally explosive and visually arrestingcondensing everything that makes Park Chan-wook unique.
It should be noted that Matthew McConaughey has been linked to the project since its inception. The script had been talked about since 2006. In 2019, Amazon even acquired the rights with the idea of giving the main role to the actor.
Accustomed to navigating between cultures and adaptations, Park Chan-wook has already drawn on Sarah Waters (Miss) or Émile Zola (Thirst, this is my blood). He also made his first English-language film with Stoker (2013).
