Wonka remains at the top of the US box office and will soon overtake Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Despite the releases ofAquaman 2 and of The Color Purplethe big winner at the end of 2023 at the box office is Wonka, also produced by Warner Bros. In this first weekend of January, Paul King’s film with “Timothée Chocolamet” remained at the top of the American box office thanks to an additional $14.4 million, distributed in 3,817 theaters. It thus accumulates 164 million greenbacks in the United States in one month of operation and already 465 million worldwide. Another 9 million and he will have doubled the final score of Charlie and the chocolate factoryby Tim Burton, in the world rankings!

In 2005, for a budget of 150 million dollars not including advertising, the family film based on the fanciful world of Roald Dahl had passed the 200 million mark in domestic revenue alone. A score that Wonka could well reach, even if it works very well abroad, where it has sold 64% of its revenues (vs. 56% for Charlie at the time).
The only novelty to enter the American top 10 of the weekend is Night Swim, a low-budget horror film from Universal. With 12 million dollars sold in 3,250 cinemas, it is ahead of The Lost Kingdom and its 10.6 million more in the third weekend (or just 100 million domestic). The rest of the ranking looks like last weekend, with the animated film Migrationthe rom-com Everything except you and a handful of independent films (Iron Claw, Ferrari, Poor creatures…) which remain in the top between 10 and 2 million additional dollars.
