A 5th Planet of the Apes film has just been announced
It’s the Marvel director of Fantastic Four: First Steps who takes up the torch.
Two years later Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdomthe cult saga is already preparing its return with a brand new film in development at 20th Century Studios.
And to pilot this new opus, the studio chose Matt Shakman, director of Fantastic Four: First Steps for Marvel Studios (and also from the series WandaVision).
The filmmaker will team up with screenwriter Josh Friedman, already involved on The New Kingdom as well as on Fantastic Four: First Steps. Together, their mission will be to dive back into the world of intelligent apes facing a declining humanity. He takes over from Matt Reeves, Ruppert Wyatt and Wes Ball, who had directed the previous films.
For the moment, no details about the plot have been revealed. We simply know that Matt Shakman will also produce the film alongside Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, historical figures of this new era of the franchise. But it should logically be a new sequel, a 5th part of the franchise initiated by Planet of the Apes: Origins in 2011 and which to date has grossed more than $2 billion at the global box office.
The previous part, Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom had enjoyed excellent reviews, but had grossed “only” 400 million dollars worldwide for an estimated budget of 160 million, the lowest score of the four films.
With the arrival of Shakman, 20th Century Studios seems to want to continue to evolve the franchise while keeping the same spectacular and emotional tone that relaunched Planet of the Apes in the rooms.
