It will center on Charles Shelby, Tommy’s son.

The succession is officially underway.

Two months after Tommy Shelby’s last stand, the sequel to Peaky Blinders is already being revealed. Charlie Heaton, the star of Stranger Things, will take over from Cillian Murphy in the role of Charles Shelby, son of Tommy. An heir who has grown up well.

Known for playing Jonathan Byers in the Netflix phenomenon series, Heaton will swap the supernatural 80s of Hawkins for the Birmingham of the 1950s. The new series will follow the next generation of Shelbys after the patriarch’s farewell.

And the synopsis already announces a complicated return to family affairs: “After fighting a violent war, often behind enemy lines, Charles Shelby is now trying to embrace a normal life. He hasn’t seen his half-brother Duke in years. Charles has cut all ties with the Peaky Blinders and the Shelbys’ hedonistic lifestyle. But can you really escape your own blood?”

The character of Duke Shelby, seen in the film as Barry Keoghan, will this time be played by Jamie Bell.

The six-episode series, currently filming in Birmingham, will be set a decade after the Second World War, as the city attempts to rebuild after the bombings of the Blitz.

The cast also includes Jessica Brown Findlay (Silo), Lashana Lynch (The Day of the Jackal) and Lucy Karczewski (Stereophonic).

No release date has been announced yet. In the UK, the series will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, while the rest of the world can watch it on Netflix.
